I had a thread on the Gaydon section regarding a road trip I did last year to Monza (and the one I'm doing this year to Monaco) for the GP.
A couple of people are interested in doing a trip like that, so I thought I'd post it here in case others want to join. The plan is to do something as simple and affordable as we can so more people can join us - so leave the black tie at home and give the butler a couple of days off.
My suggestion is:
Meeting in Folkstone (eurotunnel or Calais) then either do a shorter trip heading through Germany and down the San Bernadino pass to the lakes. Or a slightly longer trip, going through France (which I find is a bit of a bore), until we stop at Annecy (it's postcard beautiful) or Beaune. From there we could go down one of the many routes (Napoleon, Col de Iseran etc) to the med, head to Nice, through Monaco and up to Monza for the GP (where we will hopefully have some form of a meet 'n greet with the Redbull F1 team).
After that, the driving really starts.
We could head to a small town called airolo and from there we take The Tremola (the oldest alpine road which is still cobbled and beautiful) due north for a few miles then turn left on to The Furkka Pass (stop 2 bends before the Galenstock hotel for that 'Goldfinger' photo) to enjoy the amazing views, then it's up and down the other side of the mountain and across the bridge onto The Grimsel pass. This takes you winding north for 30kn until you turn right and go up through the clouds to the Susten Pass. By then you'll be worn out and seasick from all the bends lol.
After that, it's travelling back home through the borning bit again towards Paris (roads are bland but the food is good), or north through Germany (slightly better roads but with German cuisine).
I've had a reply from Billy Hyslop, who is part of the team that looks after the partnership between Aston Martin & AM Red Bull Racing F1, and he is going to talk to the F1 team to see what they can organise for us.
I suppose the more of us wanting to do the trip, the more 'weight' behind the request. So if your interested let me know so I can give Billy some rough numbers.
BTW, the route above is just an idea and I'm happy to open the trip up for group discussion.
Strange how “The prettiest car of all time” rhymes with “DB9”
